How to find us...

Arriving By Train:-

Select Cardiff Central as your initial destination. Cardiff Central is served by trains from West Wales, the North, the Midlands, the South West and London / Home Counties. Change at Cardiff Central for Arriva Trains Wales services to Barry Island. Services to Barry Island typically run three times per hour, with a journey time of 26 minutes.

When you have arrived at Barry Island, the Barry Island Railway is situated 25 yards from the entrance to the main Barry Island station.

  • NB: Please do not leave at Barry (Town) station, we are situated at Barry Island station on the branch line.

Arriving By Car:-

Using M4 Junction 33 (Cardiff West) follow the A4232 for 3 miles to Culverhouse Cross where you will go onto the A4050 signposted "Barry" . At the junction of St Nicholas Road and Park Avenue turn left onto the A4055 signposted "Barry Island" and follow this for the final 3/4 mile to the Barry Island Railway at Barry Island station. Brown "Steam loco" tourist signs are visible toward the end of your journey.

(Note limited street parking near station June to Sept, large car parks are situated approximately 400 yards away)

Arriving By Coach:-

Coaches normally drop off passengers in the vicinity of the station, or at the large coach park adjacent to the car park referred to above.

Access for visitors with impaired mobility:-

Customers with special needs are advised to phone in advance to ensure that we can properly accomodate your needs.

Access on the level is available at the Barry Island station for services such as the shop, buffet, the disabled persons toilet and the lecture / display room. Access to the station platform is mostly on the level with a small ramped bridge between platforms. Assistance is always available.

At Plymouth Road there is no public access other than on or off trains using the ramp.

At Hood Road for the Waterfront there is ramped access to the platform.

At Woodham Halt there is ramped access to the platform.

At the (yet-to-open) station at the Waterfront retail park, the platform will be accessed via a ramp.

A special carriage is available for persons with impaired mobility and is normally available on most services. Customers are advised to check that the carriage will be available by telephoning the office prior to setting out on a journey. From time to time the Disabled Persons carriage is undergoing servicing, or a particular special event may involve the use of a historic carriage that may not be suitable for persons with impaired mobility.

On the occasions that a Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) is in operation, a wheelchair ramp is carried on all services. Assistance is always available.
